K-Gr 2–Every winter, Sofía’s abuela travels from Puerto Rico to spend the holidays with Sofía and her family. Along with her, Abuela has brought her figures of the Tres Reyes Magos, as it is their tradition to move the figures closer to the manger as January 6, or Día de Reyes, nears. Abuela tells Sofía the story of their journey, and asks her to move them a little closer every day. Together, Sofía and Abuela share special moments with the family, enjoying good food, traditions, and special times together. When Día de Reyes arrives, Sofía finds special gifts in the shoebox for the Reyes Magos. And Abuela has one more surprise: she is passing on the special tradition and the figures of the Reyes Magos to Sofía, so that she may continue. Sofía knows she will one day share this tradition with her own daughter. This picture book is warmly illustrated, depicting the glow that accompanies the love of Sofía and her family. The Spanish text shares the traditions Sofía takes part in and the joy she and her family feel, as well as the special relationship between the girl and her abuela. VERDICT A beautiful Spanish-language picture book perfect for sharing during the holidays.–Selenia Paz
